Who couldn’t use an extra couple of dollars these days!?
With rising gas prices, groceries nearly doubling and food shortages we are looking for some relief. Meal prep and taking lunches to school and work can save a LOT of extra money but how can you maximize your efforts because, let’s be honest, things are getting a little crazy out there! Here are my top 3 tips for saving some extra cash when you are meal prepping!
BUY IN BULK. Shopping at wholesalers like Costco and Sams may give you discounts other grocers can’t give you. I love to purchase chicken, ground meats and frozen veggies this way. They can last a significant amount of time in the freezer. The big trick, to make life even easier, is to divide larger quantities into freezer bags and save for later. This gives you an opportunity to plan regular meals your family enjoys in advance. You may pay 💵 a little more up front this way but it can absolutely limit the number of trips you make to the market.
TAKE INVENTORY. What’s already in your pantry/fridge/freezer and how can you find easy recipes for those. I am TERRIBLE at this. I get “in the middle” for certain foods and lose interest in others but it may be time to empty out that freezer and dig that ground pork out of the back. 👉🏻It prevents waste (when it goes bad) and pulls less money from your pocket today. Turn any ground meat into egg roll in a bowl. Cabbage is cheap, we almost always have vinegar and soy sauce on hand and it’s DELICIOUS!
SHOP FOR WHATS ON SALE! Too often we go into the supermarket with a plan. Keep prep simple and cheap but finding protein & veggies on special. Look at your weekly fliers in the paper or look for sales while you’re there. When we stop thinking less about a fancy and complicated recipe and just get down to basics this can save a lot of ⏰ and 💵. One of our favorites is steak, grilled veggies and a baked potato. You get protein, veggies (and fats if you use oil to season) and carbohydrates. Check out my video for meal prepping.
Save this for later and stick on your fridge as a reminder!
